24th June 2026 – The final findings of the Ockenden report, an independent review commissioned to investigate serious concerns around maternity care and outcomes, were released today. The report was initiated following the experiences of families who raised significant issues about the safety and quality of services. It represents one of the most comprehensive examinations of maternity care in recent years, aiming to ensure that lessons are learned and that meaningful improvements are made across the system.
The report is an important and powerful reminder of the lasting impact that care during pregnancy, birth and the earliest moments of a baby’s life can have on both mother and child. These experiences shape not only physical health outcomes, but emotional wellbeing and mental health in the postnatal period and beyond.
As a client-centred organisation, we also recognise the importance of families’ voices being heard. We are glad to see the families who bravely shared their experiences and called for this inquiry being listened to, and we hope that their advocacy continues to drive meaningful learning, reflection and change.
At MumsAid, we recognise the importance of listening to families’ experiences and ensuring that every mother receives compassionate, respectful and culturally sensitive care. The report highlights the need for systems that understand the individual needs of women and families, ensuring that everyone feels heard, valued and supported.
Dr Miriam Donaghy, Founder and CEO of MumsAid, reflects: “It is also important to recognise that there are many incredible midwives who provide compassionate, skilled and life-changing care every day. These frontline professionals need the right support, supervision and resources to enable them to continue doing their vital work safely and effectively.”
Supporting mothers’ mental health means recognising the whole journey into parenthood — and ensuring that every family has access to the care, understanding and support they need from the very beginning.
